Strongly recommended. I’m not sure when I’ve reviewed a more topical movie. Autumn (newbie Sidney Flanigan) is a 17-year-old girl, pregnant and living in rust-belt Pennsylvania where abortion without parental consent is unlawful. With her cousin/bestie, Skyler (Talia Ryder, West Side Story) and insufficient funds, she travels to a neighboring state without a parental-consent requirement. The power of this movie is its procedural integrity. Director/writer Eliza Hittman (Beach Rats) uses a verité camera to film her naturalistic cast in their terrifying quest. How Autumn got pregnant is only suggested . . . the title referencing the oral questionnaire used by Planned Parenthood to uncover coercion, rape, or incest as the ’how’ of the situation. The impact on Autumn of the questionnaire is devastating, as it is on the viewer. A me-too side-story explaining how Skyler replaces their vanished funds, shows - - not tells - - that a woman’s exploitation needs not be violent to be repugnant.
