Recommended. Joe is a mostly forgotten curio of the post-60’s, Hard-Hat Wars, when New York construction workers attacked Vietnam War protestors. If it’s mentioned at all, it’s mostly as Susan Sarandon’s (Thelma and Louise) premiere and the incandescent appearance of Peter Boyle (Young Frankenstein), as the eponymous star of the film. Liberal Boyle was famously disturbed by the Nixonian reaction to the hateful, violent character he created. Bill Compton, the character played by Dennis Patrick (Dallas), is largely overlooked, although he is the lead. His character, at the time, was considered a rather melodramatic creation who got his comeuppance in the story’s conclusion; it’s doubtful that the Westchester country clubbers envisioned him a prediction of future Republican Congressional leadership. But before Norman Wexler (Saturday Night Fever) and John Avlidson (Rocky) sold out, they created a prescient movie that still has power. Joe is a classic of early 70’s apocalyptic truth-telling.
