Strongly recommended. This movie may be the most archetypical film noir of all time, right up there with D.O.A. and Out Of The Past. The essence of noir is a microcosm of society’s madness. The first element is the frantic pace. The film begins with Richard Widmark (Panic In The Streets) being chased and he never really stops. Widmark never steps far away from the signature cackle but his loony mendacity is amped up and well placed by director Jules Dassin (Rififi) amidst a three-penny opera of London’s finest scum. Mutz Greenbaum (Lucky Jim) was the cameraman and was trained in the Berlin silent picture industry. His camerawork gives Night And The City its second noirish touchstone. He spectacularly films a match between pre-Hollywood grappler Mike Mazurki (Some Like It Hot) and real-life wrestler Stanislaus Zbyszko. Gene Tierney (Laura) plays the love interest but this is not much of a romance.
