Recommended. You may be unfamiliar with Dennis Hopper’s mad magnum opus. It was pulled from distribution by Universal soon after winning the Venice Film Festival and dying at the limited box office it was allowed. After the critical and financial success of Easy Rider, Hopper stood at the height of his Hollywood arc, soon crashing after releasing this difficult, drug-drenched experimental film, shot 'high' in the Peruvian Andes. But the film has since become an underground classic, starring such rare birds as Julie Adams (Creature from the Black Lagoon), Don Gordon (Bullitt) and Sam Fuller (The Big Red One), with cameos by Michelle Phillips (Knots Landing), Peter Fonda (Easy Rider) and Dean Stockwell (Blue Velvet). The non-linear plot is not really that obscure but may take more that one viewing. Fortunately, The Last Movie was restored and finally released on DVD by Arbelos Films this fall so that's now possible.
