Strongly recommended. I must have been crazy but somehow . . . I once disliked Saoirse (‘Sir-shya’) Ronan (Brooklyn,). Perhaps I was soured by her first two big pictures, Atonement and The Lovely Bones. I’m much better now and her portrayal of the title character confirms her two previous Oscar nominations. She might just grab the statue this time. After two Emmy noms for Roseanne, Laurie Metcalf (Desperately Seeking Susan) may also win as Lady Bird’s mother. Eternal Lois Smith (East Of Eden, Twister) plays a wonderfully wise nun. The entire cast deserves a prize. When that happens, it’s usually because of the director - - herein Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha) - - who also wrote the script from her own Sacramento adolescence. I loved this movie. As Ronan plays it, Lady Bird is a real kid . . . charming but flawed. She grows up a little during our 90 minutes with her and leaves a wonderful movie behind.
