Recommended - - Atomic Blonde presents a conundrum. Given the box office health of Wonder Woman, are we seeing a burgeoning of the gynocentric action movie? Or is this just another sexploitation of wicked women, the re-emergence of Foxy Brown? Although Pam Grier was wonderfully subversive to her parts haven’t we gotten beyond all of that duplicity? Do we need yet another male-directed (David Leitch, John Wick) girl-on-girl sex scene? None of this takes anything away from the awesomeness of Charlize Theron’s (Monster) performance, which kept my attention throughout. The story was painfully awkward - - the ending particularly so - - and her co-workers were kinda lame. Costuming (Cindy Evans, Memento) was amazing and Ms. Theron’s battle-scarred make-up (Paul Pattison, Mad Max: Fury Road and Francesca Tolot, L.A. Confidential), also outstanding. Yes, the fight scenes are the money shot; however, be prepared to occupy Charlize’s corner again next February. She’s a champion.
