Not recommended. During the end credits for The Witch - - new director Robert Eggers’s eerie movie about 17th century supernatural events - - Eggers belies the ‘super’ part by claiming that the events of the movie came, “directly from period journals, diaries, and court records.” Wait . . . Is he claiming that the movie is authentic or that it is true? He seems to imply the latter in the ending and that the misogynistic barbarism of witch hunting is justified. Talk about a male gaze, I can’t imagine this shot by a real Wicca chick. All this religious stuff is important because although the butchered baby stuff creeped me out, I was never scared. The authenticity and muddled sound of the dialogue required closed captions but the photography/sound of the film was very 1600’s. The cast included the unintended silliness of a Victoria’s Secret model (Sarah Stephens) as the titular (very!) esprit maléfique.
