Recommended. Lion is the kind of movie that is very hard not to like. It combines a gritty realism with some serious heart hurting. The plight of poor Indian children is destined to affect. A deeper sadness concerns things irreversible . . . the loss of childhood . . . the hard edge of bad judgement. The wonderful Sunny Pawar plays young Saroo who - - in a moment - - become separated from home and family, lost in a country of 1.25 billion. Fortunately, he is adopted by an Australian couple (Nichole Kidman, The Hours and David Wenham, The Lord of the Rings) and grows into handsome, happy Dev Patal (Slumdog Millionaire). Saroo never forgets his origin and goes searching for his birth mother. The sequences with Pawar are tense and compelling but the movie slows down and becomes predictable with Oscar nominee Patal. Despite this, the ending is very emotional and Kidman is splendid as the adoptive mother.
