Strongly recommended. It’s odd that I returned from watching Alejandro González Iñárritu’s (Birdman) new film, The Revenant, still puzzling over my reaction but in time to see it return three dramatic Golden Globes. I can honestly say that this didn’t influence my recommendation. The Revenant is the work of a brilliant film maker who has arrived somewhere near the top of his talent. And Leonardo DiCaprio - - also and recently - - has matured here into a thoughtful and intense interpreter of brutality and reflection. Even stronger in this movie is Oscar-worthy Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) as the subject of Leo’s vengeance . . . a settling of scores that transcends rage to a higher statement on loss and life. The visual spender ( Emmanuel Lubezki, Gravity), music (Ryuichi Sakamoto, The Last Emperor) and sound editing (Lon Bender, Drive) are also worthy of Academy nods. The Revenant is a major motion picture and an essential-to-be.
