Recommended. Although I liked Mud and certainly was entertained by it, the film’s effect after reflection is much like its title character. There is a charm to this version of Stand By Me that I welcome but . . . ehhh. The main kid, played by Tye Sheridan (The Tree Of Life), was wonderfully enacted. Sheridan seems a chip off of the great, late Will Sampson, leading the story with a quiet power. Matthew McConaughey (Contact) also does some of his best work, with solid support from Reese Witherspoon (Walk The Line) and Joe Don Baker (Walking Tall). I loved ‘Deadwood’ star Ray McKinnon (The Missing) as Sheridan’s father - - a very nice sketch of 21st-century, head-of-household despair. But despite all this, I wish writer/director Jeff Nichols had shown the same courage he displayed in Take Shelter with the ending of Mud, which I won’t spoil. Too much Hollywood - - not enough West Memphis.
