Not recommended. Colombiana explains why movie critics get paid. I, who do not, don’t routinely have to sit through crap like Colombiana. I did because once upon a time Luc Bresson made good movies . . . like La Femme Nikita and The Professional, which Colombiana cannibalizes. The story begins in flashback with clunky dialogue between the heroine as a child and her soon-to-be nemesis (Jordi Mollà, Blow), then jumps to a well-filmed, free-running chase, unique in that the runner is a little girl (Amandla Stenberg), who did many of her own stunts. However, the fast-forward adult (Zoe Saldana, Avatar) never develops her own graceful stride. Part of the problem is the spastic editing, a cinematic urban myth that short-duration shots compensate for a leaden plot. Cliff Curtis (Training Day, Once Were Warriors), one of my ten favorite evildoers, gets saddled with a ridiculous Colombian accent (he’s Maori). I’m ready for summer to be OVER!
