Not recommended. So here’s the other, hotly anticipated, troubled jazzman biopic of the year. Harry James, eat your heart out. But, sadly, this is the one you should pass on. This thumb down has nothing to do with any particular apotheosis of Mr. Davis; he was one of the greatest musicians of my lifetime and ‘tho a bit of a jerk, was never small-minded. I don’t think lead actor and director Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda) - - who pursued this movie for decades - - intended to make a silly, small movie. Nevertheless. Miles Ahead veers between Rogan-esque car chase/gun battles and the Davis’s tragically clueless destruction of his real-life marriage to Frances Taylor . . . fluently re-created here by Emayatzy Corinealdi(Middle of Nowhere). The first movie could have been a thoughtful comedy about a ‘famous trumpet player.’ The second might have justified Miles’s ways to man. But Miles Ahead is actually none of the above.
