Recommended. Although I was not overwhelmed and certainly don’t see any great Academy racial injustice by its un-vite, Creed is, all things considered, a mostly satisfying movie. Mr. Stallone actually did earn his nomination, crafting a performance that maintains dignity across the years of decay. When he said doesn’t remember all those steps below the Philadelphia Museum of Art, we wonder who is really huffing and puffing. And Tessa Thomson (Selma) continues to live up to her early promise. The mild disappointment here is the reprise of director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordon, both of Fruitvale Station. The obvious talent displayed in that overlooked movie seems diminished as the film goes on . . . transitioning from a very unique break in the fight movie genre to something less interesting. Also, the music (Ludwig Göransson, Fruitvale Station) is very intrusive. But despite these flaws, Creed, goes - - more or less - - the distance.
